Gracehill House was built circa 1775 by James Stuart and named in honour of his wife, Grace Lynd. The house was originally set within an extensive private estate, which has since been thoughtfully developed to include a golf course and a popular restaurant.

The original entrance to the estate now forms a public road lined with mature beech trees, internationally recognised as The Dark Hedges, one of Northern Ireland’s most iconic tourist attractions.

The estate’s history is deeply rooted in royal heritage, dating back to the early 17th century. King James I granted the land to a cousin; however, he tragically drowned en route to Ireland before taking possession. The estate subsequently passed to his grandson, William Stuart, and remained in the Stuart family for many generations.

One of the area’s most enduring local legends is that of the Grey Lady — a spectral figure said to glide gracefully along the Bregagh Road, weaving silently between the gnarled beech trees. As she reaches the final tree, she is said to fade from view.

Local folklore offers several explanations for her identity. Some believe she is the restless spirit of a maid from the nearby house who died under mysterious circumstances centuries ago. Others suggest she may be the daughter of James Stuart, referred to in historical genealogies as “Cross Peggy”. Another belief is that she is a wandering soul from an old, long-forgotten graveyard thought to lie hidden within the surrounding fields.

According to legend, on Halloween night the forgotten graves are said to open, and the Grey Lady is joined on her nightly walk by the tormented spirits of those buried alongside her.

In more recent years, The Dark Hedges has gained international recognition after featuring as the King’s Road in the globally acclaimed HBO series Game of Thrones®. This appearance has further cemented the avenue’s status as one of Northern Ireland’s most photographed and visited landmarks, attracting fans from around the world.

Historically, the Bregagh Road also formed part of an important local transport route. A railway line once passed beneath the bridge along the road, connecting Ballymoney to Ballycastle, with stops serving the surrounding communities of DervockStranocumGracehill, and Capecastle. Although the railway is no longer in operation, its legacy remains an important part of the area’s rich industrial and social history.

In January 2016, the iconic filming location and 300-year-old avenue known as The Dark Hedged suffered significant damage during Storm Gertrude, when extreme winds uprooted two of its historic beech trees.

Rather than allowing the loss to be forgotten, a team of world-class designers and craftsmen transformed the fallen timber into something extraordinary. The wood from the two trees was carved into ten intricately designed doors, now famously known as the Doors of Thrones.

Each door represents a different episode from Season 6 of Game of Thrones, with detailed carvings that bring key moments of the story to life. The doors were installed at locations close to the series’ filming sites, forming a unique trail that stretches from Cairncastle, through the Glens of Antrim, past The Dark Hedges, and on to Cushendun Caves.

Together, the Doors of Thrones stand as a lasting tribute to both the natural heritage of the Dark Hedges and Northern Ireland’s role in one of television’s most celebrated series.
